(1947)
This is the commencement picture of Joe's service in the "Hebrew Police," an auxilliary to the English occupation force in Palestine.
Top row: Yosef , Amots M. , Ben T. , Gershon P. , Tsvi T. , Avram K. , Eli O. ,
Center row: Avram C. , Shmuel S. , Micha B. , Uri B. , Gad M. , Haim M. ,
Bottom row: Tsvi M. , Ben A.
In order to be accepted at University, everyone had to do a year of National service. The British trained this group in handling weapons, unsuspecting how soon they were to be turned back on them. They lived on a Kibutz named Kfar Makabi at the time.
The two in the middle of the picture above the building, are twins Uri and Micha Bash. Uri fell during action in the town of Acco(acre). To their left is Shmuel, also killed during the war. To their right is Gad, who saved Joe's life when he was wounded, and they had to retreat. Next to him is Chaim Manheim.
(Thanks to Joe's sister Ruthi for these details. She was 12 at the time of this picture.)
